Irish artist Paul Henry (1876-1958) spent almost a decade on Achill Island between 1910 and 1919. Paul Henry and his wife Grace Henry painted Achill landscapes and portraits of Achill people, and Paul Henry's paintings came to typify an image of the west of Ireland in the early years of the Irish Free State.

Paul Henry, the Irish artist, lived and worked on Achill Island between 1910 and 1919. While living in this west of Ireland idyll, Paul Henry took employment with the Congested Districts Board, a position that allowed him to travel frequently through Belmullet in north Mayo. This Paul Henry painting of 'Achill Head' shows a view of Croaghaun mountain on Achill, with Saddle Head and Achill Head protruding, seen from the Belmullet peninsula. The islands in the foreground may be the now deserted islands of Inishkea.
