Finglas 1979

Do something for the Christmas variety show!
My class was not given to reading
I hit on Christmas carols
and soon others wanted to join the choir.

The show was a first for the school
in an area not noted for cultural highlights
in a deprived urban area
famous for the sound of squad cars.

Adestes Fideles, O Come All Ye Faithful!
Silent Night, Hark The Herald Angels
It's all a dream, an illusion now
Reading lessons as much as music and song.

The V.E.C. gave navy blazers
ill fitting but greatly prized.
Twenty four first year boys
poised on stage for the curtain.

In the dim light I saw their glowing faces
hearts and souls in every note
as earnest as the Sistine Chapel choir.
Silent night, Holy Night!

Blazers folded with reverent care
placed in V.E.C. boxes
Some teachers said I'd never see them again
or they would be torn or soiled.

For those few moments they had performed
in front of their parents and the school.
They had attained to a dignity
held by the blazers and their songs.

What they may not know is
that the gratitude and love they gave me
has filled my deprived heart now
in a different urban waste.
