My Dream

I walked towards the priest for communion
inside his mouth were tufts of hair
all my hair is falling out
there was hair on his fingers
he tried to flick it off to give me communion
but it stuck
as it had done with me the night before
hair everywhere-so upsetting.
are you the woman who is on chemotherapy
and whose hair is all falling out
I am
hang on for a moment
the priest left me there and went back to the altar
he brought me three vials of the precious blood
sit down there and take your time
and drink this and mind yourself.

I had been impatient with myself
as if I had no right to feel bad about
all my hair falling out in great tufts
It was frightening as well as everything else
the dream reminded me that god cares for me
at a very intimate level
even the very hairs of my head are numbered
every intimate detail known
especially in my suffering
I should at least have the same amount
of concern and love for myself.
