My Pet Wolf

I've had a pet wolf now
Since I was very young.
They brought it in from the wild
And gave it to me.

I tamed the little cub
And treated it like a pet lamb.
I kept it in the house
Always well under control.

Soon I needed a strong box,
A sort of cage to lock it away
In case it ever came out
At the wrong time or place.

I forgot
That it was not really
A lamb
Even though it acted like one
In order to get food, drink and attention.

My pet wolf has a soft underbelly
With a sleek grey coat of fur.
But its mouth is red, raw and raging.
The box is not strong enough to hold it.

Lately I've noticed that my wolf
Has developed wild habits.
It cries out in rage and despair
Bristling its hear within the locked box.

Its teeth are like sharpened spikes.
Claws have appeared on its feet.
A rasping sound has replaced
The usual lamb like bleating.

The strong box shakes in terror.
Many times I've changed the locks
The sides are lined with red cedar
Steel bars added for safety.

I've cut back on its ration
In order to teach it a lesson.
But part of me knows that it can,
And will, soon break out.
