Nuns

We thought we were above comment!
Nuns in our holy habits
going along our blinkered paths
until it was too late.

Special clothes and rituals,
status and titles set us apart
dedicated to spiritual matters
well bred, conformists, self fulfilled.

When nuns began to leave in droves,
me among them, the system rocked
for a short while. People were shocked!
No one knew how to deal with the exit.

We were caught in no man's land!
No rights, no past, no future
no map for the journey and very
little money. First real taste of poverty.

Few joined since. Many left.
Those behind became vulnerable
as power and status fell away.
People no longer care for the species.

Some of my very good friends
remain in convents, finding peace
and fulfilment in serving others
faithful to the end and blessed.

Other friends of mine who left
carry the heavy burden of transition
from a way of life that was
and may never be again.
