Pollagh Shore

Sea spray fills my nostrils with its tangy saltness
Sharp, shale rocks etch their pressure underfoot.
Smooth, rounded pebbles and stones
Feel sickly sweet as I press them to my face.
Sun rays travel through my bones
Providing heat and smooth satisfaction.

Gentle lapping wave endings
Play around my toes
Causing silt, sand and gritty discomfort.
Wet satin finish of seaweed
Once carried in heavy baskets for local crops
Now slap and beat in a hollow inlet.
Sands drift beneath my feet.
The sudden pull alerts me
To the tide turning time.

Overhead seagulls screech and roar
In playful pursuit of fishy odours.
The air bends and folds at their approach
Gathers itself around my shoulders and legs
Rustling my wet scarf and skirt.
I shiver slightly before stretching in full comfort
Against the moulded roundness of my precious rock.
Tears travel in tiny rivers down my face
As I recall days of blissful childhood
Near this rocky shore.
