The Rocks of Creg Bherige

We played here as small children
Exploring the crevices and tunnels
Finding mysterious hiding places
Dark enough but not too frightening.

Always on the edge of adventure
Crawling into the foxes' dens
Peering out through rabbit's eyes
Covering ourselves in grey granite.

Sometimes we achieved a breakthrough
Climbing up a twisted chimney
Squeezing through the rocks
Bursting out into bright sunshine.

Often we stayed quite still inside
The rock castle acting as a shield.
We listened to our mother's voices
Mingling with the music of the sea.

Days and weeks saving turf on the bog
Relieved by the magic of Creg Bherige,
Crawling out on to the heather
Catching the scent of bog flowers.

The rocks yielded inner hiding places
Where we could be our different selves
Giving us shade in the sunshine
And shelter in the driving rain.

We tumbled out on to the soft green circle
Laughing and playing aloud
The secret magic of the rock structure
And the soft green circle still call me back.
