Survival

The grey, white shell clings for life
To the slippery, jagged, rock face.
Swirling foam and swishing waves
Do not dislodge it from its chosen place.
Inside the shell life begins and ends
In the dark safety of unseeing light.

Gentle hands nudge the shell away
It is clamped firmly to the rock face.
Salt winds beat and tear at tiny fingers
Soon firm pressure eases the shell away.
Inside the shell life begins and ends
In the dark safety of unseeing light.

The empty cavity reveals life long gone.
Hollow lime-white walls echo absence.
Rough edged grey white shell outside
Contrasts with satin bright lining.
inside the shell life begins and ends
In the dark safety of unseeing light.

Chill clammy feel of life that never was
Never dared let go of dark, rock face.
Grasped the spot with cold, blind fury,
Protective until nothing remained to protect.
Inside the shell, life has begun and ended
In the dark safety of unseeing light.
