Archive of poetry by Anne KellyThe School DentistWhen I was ten the dentist came to school We sat quietly expecting his butchery. The nuns were in a flap School routine was out. What took you so long? "He was próchan around in my mouth for ages He couldn't get out my tooth." They laughed at my bloody rage. Later I was presented to the dentist His white coat was off and all the shiny Instruments and basins were put away. Tell the dentist what you said. "I said you were próchan around in my mouth for ages!" The nuns were amused As the dentist with his gleaming teeth Smiled down in my direction. Even then I felt abused As they laughed at the local dialect. They had not quite taken the teeth Out of our village language. But from now on the joke would be on them. It would be town talk for me "How now brown cow!" And no more use of local words like "próchan". by Anne Kelly Archive index | Next poem » |
