Ireland pictures : Gallery 2 : Dugort, Achill Island
This image in our series of Ireland pictures from Achill Island shows Dugort strand / Pollawaddy beach and part of the village of Dugort (Dumhach Goirt). In the middle distance can also be seen the beach of Barnyagappul Strand at Dugort while the north Mayo mainland and the peaks of Slieve Car and the Nephin Beg range can be seen in the far distance. Dugort is home to Achill's oldest hotel, established in 1839 and now known as the Slievemore Hotel. The German Nobel-prize winning writer Heinrich Boll regularly stayed at a cottage in Dugort from 1957 to the 1970s. |
